 Clinical Focus

January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month! It might seem strange for a home health and hospice agency to promote glaucoma awareness. However, glaucoma management is a home health service provided by Medicare. In fact, glaucoma is one of the leading causes of vision loss in the geriatric population. Glaucoma related blindness can result in close to a 40% vision loss before it is detected (glaucoma.org). Blindness impacts social engagement and independent living. Home health professionals are uniquely trained to proactively create environments that support an individual’s capacity for prolonged independent living and the establishment of health regimens to delay disease progression.
