Clinical Focus

April is an opportunity to introduce areas of focus that Elite is proud to partner with and support in our communities. This week, we are highlighting IBS Awareness Month. IBS impacts 10-15% of the population and results in chronic symptom management due to an improperly functioning digestive system. Symptoms present as the ABCDs– abdominal cramps, bloating, constipation, and diarrhea. IBS is a unique disease process though often grouped with Crohn’s, ulcerative colitis, and inflammatory bowel disease. Treatment is a collaboration with healthcare professionals in gastroenterology and dietary. The presence of IBS often creates complex case management when paired with other disease processes due to the sensitivities in the bowels. Collaboration and coordination within the care team is crucial for symptom management and general health.

Question Corner

Why is the face-to-face so important for home health?

Home health services are directly linked to a medical condition that the physician has addressed. Therefore, a face-to-face links the need for specialists in nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, social work, and dietary to the management of a specific condition or resulting symptoms from a disease process. A referral diagnosis should identify the disease process that requires home health interventions. This is why referrals with symptoms are often rejected since this does not meet the Medicare criteria. Ultimately, a physician is required for home health to follow the patient through the interventions proposed by rehabilitation professionals. The face-to-face creates the picture of the patient’s medical complexities and the need for para-medical professionals to support recovery and project outcomes. Though these interventions address symptoms, the skilled need is directly related to the underlying disease process. The face-to-face is this link.
